Where from
Folds give a fabric depth, form and movement. In smocking they are gathered by fine stitches and decorated at the same time – a technique that has found its place in the Tracht of many regions. Together with a Salzburg Säcklerin, a traditional leather craftswoman, we transferred this craft onto leather. In this way a familiar technique takes on a new expression.
What
Running stitches lay small folds which are then embroidered over until a waffle-shaped relief emerges. The smooth calf leather gives the structure body and lets light and shadow stand out clearly. This is how the bag gains its particular character. Seen close up, the careful work shows in every single row.
What for
The classic one is restrained and can be combined in many ways. The cylinder form offers more room, a zip running all the way round and a removable inner pocket. It is the most extravagant of the three models. The round form appears playful and accompanies festive evenings. What they all share is the Waffelsmok, which comes into its own with a Dirndl just as beautifully as with a dress.
Why
Every row of Waffelsmok is worked into the smooth leather by hand and takes about an hour. Row by row, a small work of art emerges that calls for patience, experience and a sure hand.
