A Lederhose is bought close-fitting, worn for a long time and becomes, over the years, what it is meant to be.
Where from
The hide comes from the native red deer and is chamois-tanned, following one of the oldest tanning techniques of all. Train oils, that is fish oils, are worked into the deer hide instead of using chromium salts. The trousers then spend a while in the workshop until they are finished. Good things simply need time to reach completion.
What
What comes out of the tanning feels velvety and soft and has a fine, open surface. It carries four colours: birch, oak, alder and chestnut. The embroidery can stand raised, as hunting relief embroidery, or go into the depth, when the pattern is burned in with the laser. Both sit on the bib, the leg and the knife pocket.
What for
The unembroidered one keeps to the essentials. The Salzburger places discreet embroidery on the bib and the knife pocket, the Ausseer carries the hunting relief embroidery down to the leg, and the 7-seam model shows three decorative seams each to the left and right of the trouser seam. It is worn with the Pfoad, the traditional shirt, and with Stutzen, in winter as in summer, and on hot days the Hanferne takes its place.
Why
So that it sits properly, it is bought as close-fitting as possible. The more often it is worn, the softer and more supple the deerskin becomes, until it follows your own movement. Beyond that it hardly needs any care, for the deerskin even takes up grease marks over time. If it is dirty, you rub it gently against itself until the dirt falls away.
