Where from
Finely embroidered braces were once precious tokens of love from young ladies to their sweethearts. Gössl takes up this tradition and carries the Gobelin embroidery over to the belt. The colours of the Meraner recall the House of Meran, the family that came from the union of Archduke Johann and Anna Plochl.
What
Fine stitches come together in a regular pattern of red, blue, silver and green. With its dense surface, Gobelin embroidery recalls woven tapestries. The finer it is worked, the closer its effect comes to pictorial weaving. In the Meraner this filigree work meets sturdy cowhide, which frames the embroidery and gives it support.
What for
The Meraner suits the Lederhose just as well as chinos or five-pocket trousers. With plain trousers its embroidery sets a colourful accent; with the Pfoad, the traditional shirt, and the Gilet it complements the Gwand quite naturally. A belt for everyday and for the Sunday on which it may be a little more.
Why
Sturdy cowhide forms the foundation, the fine embroidery gives it its character. With wearing, the leather gains a patina and gradually tells of the years of its owner. In this way the Meraner becomes a familiar companion that one reaches for again and again.
Gössl has revived the traditional Gobelin embroidery historically used on braces and carried it over to the belt, which is more popular today. The designs take up the traditional colour palette of the House of Meran.
Gobelin embroidery is characterised by even cross stitches or petit point that imitate the regular structure of woven tapestries. The finer the embroidery is worked, the harder it becomes to tell it apart from pictorial weaving.
