Where from
We have been working here since 1947, with techniques passed from hand to hand within the house. The Ausseer hand printing comes from the Wach company in Bad Aussee, whose printing blocks are in part a hundred and fifty years old. Smocking comes from the Tracht of many regions, and Gobelin embroidery takes its name from the Paris manufactory. Everything begins with the tool.
What
The printing block is cut from hardwood and completed with brass pins, one block for each colour, and a set can comprise twenty of them. In smocking, the hand lays small pleats with running stitches and embroiders over them until a relief of folds stands. In plating, a ground thread and a plating thread run one over the other and lift the pattern out in relief.
What for
Hand printing is found on aprons, pocket squares and ties of pure silk, and for some time now on deerskin as well. Waffle smocking runs across cuffs, collars and Mieder (bodices). The five-sided bar tack closes the button placket of the Pfoad, the traditional shirt, and it is the place where a monogram finds its spot. And plated knitting is used where a brocade pattern is to stand in fine merino wool.
Why
Where two block placements meet, a fine offset remains, which is called the Modelzaumstond. It turns out a little differently each time, and that is exactly how you recognise that a hand has worked here. With smocking and with embroidery it is the same: what is set by hand never repeats itself quite exactly. In this way every length of cloth becomes an Original.
