Twenty years after the invention of the mechanical loom in 1785, the pioneering spirit of the French silk weaver Joseph-Marie Jacquard led to a ground-breaking innovation. He found a way to raise and lower the warp threads individually for each weft thread. What sounds highly technical opened up the possibility of weaving patterns of a fineness hardly imaginable until then. That historical Jacquard looms are still used today to produce authentic fabrics for the church, the theatre and Tracht stands as a symbol of the inventor's success. At a local weaving mill, Gössl combines the Jacquard technique with traditional patterns of Tracht. The sculptural structure and fine patterning of the Jacquard create a lively surface that gives the Dirndl depth and character.
