Luminous Blaudruck

The Dirndl in a classic cut shows a bodice of true Blaudruck velvet. The shimmering velvet and the intense blue create a singular melange. The skirt of Dupioni silk contrasts the bodice in refined restraint. The Munich neckline is wreathed by an artful Henndorf ruffle. Fine metal buttons stand in a row along the button placket. The back is adorned with a Hexenstich (herringbone stitch).

The Blaudruck – intense and expressive

The Blaudruck, the indigo resist print, has a long tradition in Austria. It is true craftsmanship, perfected early on and preserved over centuries. Through its strong colour and its contrasting effect, the traditional Blaudruck immediately shows a fascinating presence. The numerous details that make up a genuine Blaudruck arise first and foremost from the demanding production process. For what is printed is precisely what will not be dyed later on. Traditional motifs are printed on in precise handwork with pure acacia resin. The natural drying process then takes up to ten weeks. Only once it is certain that the resin can fully withstand the colour is the fabric dipped into the dye bath. Gössl takes up this heritage of textile refinement humbly, yet does not shy away from adding further chapters to this success story and enriching traditional fabrics and refining techniques with new variations. Combined with new colours, Gössl shows the Blaudruck as the versatile all-rounder of Tracht.

From these traditional ingredients Gössl now derives a new innovation that brings out this depth even more intensely. From linen and cotton a fine velvet fabric is created, which takes up the singular indigo blue of the Blaudruck and its many layers in a particular way. The natural structure of the fibres, resembling fine hairs, refracts incoming light in yet more facets. Through the luminous surface of the velvet and its delicate folds, the slightly irregular dyeing of the Blaudruck is impressively combined with the natural shadows of the fabric. In their interplay, the nuances of the Blaudruck and the surface of the velvet recall the gentle swell of small waves on alpine mountain lakes, which – at times more, at times less – allow a view of their bed.
