What do you wear with Lederhosen?

Which shirt goes with the Lederhose?
You can wear different shirts with the Lederhose. What matters is the occasion, the season and the question of whether you wish to put your Gwand together in a casual or a more festive way.
The Gössl Pfoad for summer
The Gössl Pfoad in Normandy linen is for us the stand-collar shirt as such. In summer it is a particularly beautiful companion to the Lederhose. The natural structure of the linen harmonises with the lively surface of the leather.
In a plain colour the combination appears calm and clear. Anyone out and about casually can just as well reach for a patterned model. Match the pattern to the embroidery of the Lederhose and to a Gilet, if one is worn, so that every detail is shown to advantage.
The button-down shirt as a versatile companion
A button-down shirt can likewise be worn well with the Lederhose. The collar points fastened at the tips give it a well-groomed and at the same time easy character.
It suits a plain combination with a belt just as well as it does under a Gilet or a jacket. Choose colour and pattern so that they harmonise with leather and knitwear.

Can a Lederhose be worn with a tie?
Yes. At Gössl we combine the Lederhose quite deliberately with a tie and a lapel jacket. The man of the world wears Lederhosen – and shows with the choice of his companions how versatile they can be.
Pay attention to a well-fitting shirt collar and to a tie whose colour and pattern take up the rest of the combination. A calm jacket gives an expressive tie room; with a richly designed Gilet the tie may be more restrained.

Which Stutzen are worn with the Lederhose?
Stutzen, the knitted calf warmers, are an essential part of the classic combination. They visually connect Lederhose and shoe and, through their knitted pattern, bring a further craftsmanly structure into the Gwand.
The Gössl Stutzen has been developed over decades in fit, Model and yarn blend. "Model" here means the knitted pattern. Its character arises from the interplay of these three qualities.
When making your choice, colour alone should therefore not decide. Pay attention to how the Stutzen sits on the leg and how its knitted pattern works with the Lederhose. With a short Lederhose in particular it is a clearly visible part of the whole Gwand.
Which shoes go with the Lederhose?
The Haferl shoe is the classic choice with a Lederhose and Stutzen. It complements the traditional combination and suits both the Pfoad and a Gwand with a Gilet and jacket.
Besides this, other shoes are possible. At Gössl we distinguish here according to occasion and regional feeling for style.

Can trainers be worn with the Lederhose?
For an easy combination trainers are possible. We recommend doing without Stutzen in that case. In this way the effect remains clear and casual.
Choose a rather plain shoe that fits into the colours of the Gwand. For a traditional or festive occasion, Haferl shoes are usually the more coherent choice.
Do moccasins go with the Lederhose?
In our Austrian understanding of style, moccasins can accompany a Lederhose well. In a traditionally Bavarian setting they are often judged more reservedly.
This is not a rule that applies everywhere. If you move in a particularly tradition-conscious setting, you are on safer ground with Haferl shoes and Stutzen.
Which jacket goes with the Lederhose?
Jackets in linen, Loden and Walk go with a Lederhose. Which you choose depends on the temperature, the occasion and the effect you wish for.
We particularly like to recommend a jacket in Joppe length: that is, somewhat shorter, so that the belt buckle can still remain visible at the front. This length takes up the proportions of the Lederhose and also leaves the belt its place in the overall picture.
If the combination is to appear more elegant, a jacket in classic length is equally possible. A lapel jacket lends itself especially when you wear a tie shirt and a tie with it.

Lapel here refers to the form of the collar, not to the cloth. A lapel jacket can also be made of linen or Loden, for example.
Why does a Gilet belong with the Lederhose?
The Gilet is the jewellery of the man. As soon as the jacket is laid aside, it moves to the centre and gives the combination its own character.
It may be plain or richly decorated. A calm Gilet lets shirt and Lederhose appear more strongly. An elaborately worked model sets the emphasis itself and is shown to particularly beautiful advantage with restrained companions.
When trying it on, pay attention to the length: the Gilet should harmonise with the waistband of the Lederhose and also sit comfortably when closed. Check the combination both with and without a jacket.
Belt or braces with the Lederhose?
Today Gössl relies on the belt as the contemporary companion to the Lederhose. We no longer carry braces.
A belt with a larger buckle may deliberately be visible. It closes the combination at the waistband and can form a design detail in its own right.
Match the buckle to the other decoration. With a richly embroidered Lederhose and a striking Gilet it is worth looking closely at how the details work with one another. A shorter Joppe shows the belt buckle to particularly good advantage.
Three ways to combine the Lederhose
One and the same Lederhose can be worn in different ways through shirt, shoes and jacket.

What should be borne in mind when putting it together?
Consider your Gwand as a whole. Leather, linen, knitwear and the decoration each bring a surface of their own. Their effect should be matched to one another.
Check these five points in particular:
- Shirt collar: does it suit the intended combination with or without a tie?
- Jacket length: do the proportions of the Lederhose remain coherent?
- Gilet and belt: do their edges and decoration harmonise with one another?
- Stutzen and shoes: do they follow the same classic or casual way of wearing?
- Colours and patterns: is there a recognisable connection between the individual models?

Does a checked shirt have to be worn with the Lederhose?

Can a Lederhose be worn elegantly?
Yes. With a tie shirt, tie, Gilet and lapel jacket the Lederhose can be combined in a deliberately elegant way. The setting of the particular event remains decisive.
Are Stutzen always necessary with the Lederhose?
For us they belong to the classic combination with Haferl shoes. Anyone wearing the Lederhose casually with trainers should, as we recommend, do without Stutzen.
Is a Gilet needed when a jacket is worn?
A Gilet is not a requirement, but it clearly enriches the combination. Especially when the jacket is laid aside, it remains visible as the jewellery of the man and gives the Gwand character.
Does the jacket with the Lederhose have to be short?
A shorter Joppe suits it particularly well and leaves the belt buckle visible. For a more elegant combination a jacket in classic length can also be chosen.
