Embroidered with a playful needle

Allgäu glass buttons

Singularity and lasting value give jewellery made of glass the timeless elegance that is loved by so many. Traditional expertise and dexterity are the hallmark of the Allgäu glass bead and button manufactory. Here everything begins with quartz sand, soda, lime and colourant. The ingredients are fused under great heat and worked into thin rods. Only now does the actual button come into being: the end of the glass rod is heated to around 1,000 degrees and then pressed into a "Kappl", a mould of steel or nickel. The specialist knows that only the right moment guarantees a flawless result. After 24 hours of slow cooling, the surplus corners are finally removed and the rough surface is smoothed with diamond grinding wheels. In the last step the small works of art are refined; depending on the motif, they are vapour-coated with precious metals or have artful patterns ground into them. Every button thus becomes an unmistakable one-off. Gössl completes many models with these small works of art.
