The drawn-thread hem

The drawn-thread hem is a favourite edge finish on loosely woven fabrics such as linen. First, a few weft threads above the hem edge are removed, then a set number of warp threads are gathered with the sewing needle and stitched to the edge finish. The result is a delicate edge with small openwork gaps. In this way the hem, too, becomes a true work of art.

Allgäu glass buttons

Uniqueness and lasting value give jewellery made of glass the timeless elegance that is so widely loved. Traditional expertise and manual skill are the hallmark of the Allgäu glass bead and button manufactory. Here everything begins with quartz sand, soda, lime and colouring agents. The ingredients are fused under great heat and worked into thin rods. Only now does the button itself come into being: the end of the glass rod is heated to around 1,000 degrees and then pressed into a "Kappl", a mould of steel or nickel. The specialist knows that only the right moment guarantees a perfect result. After 24 hours of slow cooling, the surplus corners are finally removed and the rough surface is smoothed with diamond grinding wheels. In the last step the small works of art are refined; depending on the motif, they are vapour-coated with precious metals or have artful patterns ground into them.
