To every little apron its little bow

Where clothing itself once gave information about a woman's social standing, a new tradition has developed over the past decades. The knowledgeable lover of Tracht knows: depending on where the bow is worn, custom recognises different meanings.

Bow on the left – brings luck

If a woman wears the bow on the left side, she shows that she is not yet taken. Small, tasteful flirtations are therefore permitted.

Bow on the right – take care now

If a woman appears with her apron tied on the right, it means unmistakably that her heart already belongs to another. It is also suited to warding off persistent suitors.

Bow in the middle

This is the traditional sign that the wearer is still a virgin. Those who are undecided also like to tie the bow here.

Bow at the back

With the bow tied at the back, the wearer shows that she is widowed.
